Cinematographer in Guangzhou

Ryan Potts (Rynos) is a Director / DP based in Guangzhou. After twenty years embedded in South China's creative industry, he plans, crews, and shoots commercial, fashion, product, and narrative work here, with the local knowledge to keep a shoot on time.

Guangzhou is Ryan Potts's (Rynos) home base - the city where most of the work is planned, crewed, and shot. After twenty years embedded in South China's creative industry, the knowledge runs deep: which studios have the best grip and lighting stock, which locations permit camera crews without six weeks of paperwork, which local crew members bring the right combination of skill and professionalism for an international brief.

That depth of local knowledge is difficult to replicate from outside. It's also, practically speaking, the difference between a production that runs on time and one that doesn't.

Guangzhou as a production location

Guangzhou is underused as a production location by international clients - most default to Shanghai or Beijing for "China shoots" without realising what the city offers. The architecture spans Qing Dynasty courtyard houses in Xiguan, the brutalist grandeur of the Tianhe business district, the layered history of Shamian Island, and the industrial scale of the Pearl River waterfront. The subtropical light - intense, warm, directional in the early morning and late afternoon - is exceptional for outdoor work.

The production infrastructure is equally strong. Guangzhou and neighbouring Shenzhen together form the most capable equipment ecosystem in South China, with gear houses stocking current-generation cinema cameras, LED lighting, and specialist accessories.

Work shot in Guangzhou

Projects shot here include Suits for Hire (narrative short, Blackmagic URSA Mini 4.6K, Dulens APO Mini Primes), the EAR Phones character series (product/lifestyle, Shenzhen), and the GutSmart testimonial campaign. The city's visual range - from sleek modern interiors to colonial architecture and dense urban texture - makes it a versatile backdrop for work across categories.
