Fashion Cinematography in China & Asia

Ryan Potts (Rynos) is a fashion cinematographer based in Guangzhou. He shoots fashion films, beauty content, and brand campaigns across China and Asia, on digital and Super 16mm, for clients including CHANEL, BVLGARI, and Off-White.

Fashion film is a discipline built on contradictions: movement and stillness, restraint and excess, the body as landscape and as character. Getting that tension right on screen requires more than technical craft - it requires a point of view. Over two decades shooting across Asia, Ryan Potts (Rynos) has developed a visual language for fashion work that leans into texture, light as atmosphere, and the kinetic energy between subject and camera.

Client work includes CHANEL, BVLGARI, PAIGE, Off-White, AMI Paris, AWOR, and Bobbi Brown - spanning editorial campaigns, brand films, beauty content, and retail launches. Talent worked with includes Zhou Xun, Crystal Liu, Wang Yibo, Liu Wen, and Henry Lau.

Analog film for fashion

A growing number of fashion and luxury brands are returning to analog formats for their moving image work. 16mm and Super 16mm in particular offer a grain structure and tonal quality that digital struggles to replicate - particularly for skin tones and fabric texture. Rynos shot First Date in Shanghai for PAIGE on Kodak Vision3 500T, Super 16mm, and the response confirmed what many already sense: film carries weight that digital still chases.

If your brief has any pull toward that aesthetic, the analog cinematography page is worth a read.

China as a production location for fashion

China offers extraordinary variety for fashion production - the architecture and energy of Shanghai, the subtropical light of Guangzhou, the colonial density of Hong Kong. Each city reads differently on camera, and each has its own production culture. Rynos has shot fashion work in all of them.

Working with international fashion brands

Most international fashion brands shooting in China run into the same friction points: communication gaps with local crew, unexpected permit requirements, styling and art direction that doesn't translate. As an English-speaking, Mandarin-fluent DP embedded in South China's creative community, Rynos removes that friction. The foreign production teams guide covers this in detail.
