Cinematographer in Shanghai

Ryan Potts (Rynos) is a Director / DP who shoots commercial, fashion, and brand-documentary work in Shanghai. He assembles a vetted local crew, knows the city's locations, and shoots on digital or Super 16mm.

Shanghai is China's commercial production capital - the city where international brands most commonly anchor their China shoots. The reasons are practical: the largest concentration of international-standard studios, the deepest local talent pool for stylists, art directors, and specialists, and a city aesthetic that reads as globally legible while remaining distinctly Chinese.

Ryan Potts (Rynos) shoots in Shanghai regularly. The most recent project: First Date in Shanghai - a fashion film for PAIGE, shot on Super 16mm Kodak Vision3 500T. The decision to bring an analog format to Shanghai's specific architectural texture - the French Concession's plane trees, the art deco facades, the narrow longtang alleys - was deliberate. The city has a visual history that grain and latitude serve better than digital sharpness.

Shanghai as a production location

Beyond the familiar Bund and Lujiazui skyline, Shanghai offers extraordinary visual range for production: the dense historical lanes of the Former French Concession, the converted industrial spaces of M50 and the West Bund, the modernist housing blocks of the inner districts, and the sprawling new urban fabric of Pudong. For fashion and commercial work, the city's international retail and hospitality infrastructure means access to locations that would be harder to source in other Chinese cities.

Working in Shanghai as an outside DP

Unlike Guangzhou where Rynos is based, Shanghai productions require advance crew assembly and location scouting. This is a standard part of the process - the city's production ecosystem is deep enough that an experienced DP can assemble a strong crew quickly through established relationships. For international clients who need a Shanghai-based shoot but want a DP who knows how China works from the inside, this is exactly that.
