16mm Film & Analog Cinematography in Asia

Ryan Potts (Rynos) shoots 16mm and Super 16mm film across commercial, fashion, and narrative projects in China and Asia. Based in Guangzhou, he runs the full analog pipeline, from stock and loading through processing, scan, and grade.

There is something film does that digital cannot fully replicate - not as a technical statement, but as a felt experience for the viewer. The grain structure of Kodak Vision3. The way highlights roll off instead of clip. The micro-contrast in shadows that reads as depth rather than information. These qualities are not an aesthetic choice layered on top of an image; they are the image. They come from the photochemical process and cannot be fully synthesised in post.

Ryan Potts (Rynos) shoots on 16mm and Super 16mm film and has done so across commercial, fashion, and narrative projects in China and Asia. The most recent is First Date in Shanghai - a fashion film for PAIGE, shot on Kodak Vision3 500T, Super 16mm, in Shanghai.

Why shoot on film in 2024+

The question isn't whether digital can approximate the look - it can get close. The question is whether close is good enough for what you're making. For luxury fashion, analog film carries a material weight that audiences have been trained to associate with quality and authenticity. For narrative work, it changes the way subjects perform on set. For commercial work targeting younger audiences, it reads as differentiated.

Film is not the right choice for every project. But if the brief has any tension toward texture, warmth, or a sense of time - it's worth the conversation.
