Narrative Cinematography in Asia
Ryan Potts (Rynos) is a narrative cinematographer based in Guangzhou. He shoots short films, branded fiction, and experimental work across Asia, on digital and Super 16mm, where performance and atmosphere lead.
Narrative work - short films, branded fiction, experimental pieces - is where a DP's visual instincts are tested without the safety net of a brief that specifies the outcome. The story determines the grammar: where the camera sits, how it moves, what it refuses to show. Ryan Potts (Rynos) approaches narrative work with the same rigour applied to commercial projects, but with a different set of priorities. Performance and atmosphere lead. Everything else follows.
Recent narrative projects include Suits for Hire - a short shot on Blackmagic URSA Mini 4.6K Pro G2 with Dulens APO Mini Primes in Guangzhou - and First Date in Shanghai for PAIGE, shot on Super 16mm Kodak Vision3 500T. Rynos also shot the Cannes 2023 Young Chinese Filmmakers documentary, bringing the same observational approach to a portrait of emerging talent at the festival.
Analog formats for narrative
16mm and Super 16mm film have a particular place in narrative work. The grain, the latitude, the way the format responds to available light - these aren't aesthetics you can fully replicate in post. For narrative projects where the look matters as much as the story, shooting on film is worth the conversation. Rynos has done it and can guide the process from stock selection through to scanning and grade. More detail on the analog cinematography page.
Branded narrative and hybrid work
The line between commercial and narrative work has blurred significantly. Many of the most effective brand films are short films with a commercial function - they tell a story, they have a point of view, they earn the viewer's attention rather than purchasing it. The BBC StoryWorks documentary for DHL and 8BitDo is a strong example: a genuine human story told in a branded context, shot with the same care as any independent production.
Collaboration and development
For independent short film projects, Rynos is open to collaboration at the development stage - not just as a hired DP but as a creative partner who can contribute to the visual concept before a single frame is shot. Based in Guangzhou with connections across the filmmaking communities of South China and Hong Kong.
