Commercial Cinematography in China & Asia

Ryan Potts (Rynos) is a commercial cinematographer based in Guangzhou, working most often across Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. He shoots brand films, TV commercials, and campaign content for global and Chinese brands, and can run the whole production directly.

Ryan brings 20+ years in the industry, including 15 working in Asia. His commercial work ranges from product campaigns to interview-led brand documentaries.

Past clients include Huawei, DHL × BBC StoryWorks, Fiido, XPeng, OPPO, VIVO, and TCL - covering everything from product launches and brand documentaries to testimonial campaigns and corporate content.

Commercial films and brand documentaries

Ryan was Director of Photography on the Vivo X300 Ultra campaign, a seven-day shoot across mainland China and Hong Kong. The project combines cinema-camera footage with material shot on the phone itself.

For brand-documentary work, see Macao Tourism × BBC StoryWorks, a hero film and five character portraits, and the Huawei × BBC StoryWorks mini-series. Ryan was DP on both. On Huawei, he handled the cinematography in China while director Kevin Pham worked from London.

What commercial work looks like here

South China's production infrastructure - centred on Guangzhou and Shenzhen - is among the most capable in Asia. Gear houses stock ARRI, RED, and Sony cinema cameras. Studio facilities rival those in Shanghai and Hong Kong. Local crews are fast, professional, and experienced with international clients. What's less common is a DP who understands both the international agency brief and local production conditions. Ryan speaks English and Mandarin, connecting the creative brief with the local crew.

Projects are shot on digital or analog formats depending on the brief. For brand films requiring a premium, textured look, 16mm has become an increasingly requested option - see the analog cinematography page for more on that.

Serving international agencies and brands

Hire Ryan as DP alongside your director and producer, or discuss a Ryan-led shoot with local production support agreed around the brief. Crew, locations, logistics and permissions are assigned to the relevant people during prep. Start with the guide for foreign production teams.
